About St. Petersburg Judicial Building

Located at 545 1st Avenue North, this modernist courthouse was constructed between 1968 and 1970, designed by Anderson, Johnson & Henry Parrish, and built by Daniel Construction Company.

The five‑story structure features striking textured concrete and vertical glass elements, with an iconic elevated plaza and large arched windows at the façade’s base—an embodiment of late‑1960s civic architecture 1. An expansion in 1976 enhanced its capacity to serve the community.

Today, the building remains a key component of the Sixth Judicial Circuit, accommodating both Pinellas County Circuit and County Courts. It continues to serve as a central location for judicial proceedings and public services, reflecting the region’s legal heritage and civic life.

In 2022, the courthouse underwent a substantial modernization to enhance functionality, security, and public service. Renovations included a complete transformation of the fifth floor—replacing the former law library with new Family Court courtrooms, updated judicial spaces, and secure circulation improvements. Additional upgrades throughout the building introduced refreshed public areas, renovated restrooms, revised jury and conference spaces, a re‑designed law library, and a new lobby entry featuring modern security glazing and updated mechanical systems. Together, these improvements preserve the building’s historic character while supporting the evolving needs of the Sixth Judicial Circuit and the community it serves.

Service Animals in Courthouses

The Sixth Judicial Circuit is committed to providing equal access to the courts. This includes clear rules for bringing animals into a courthouse or during court proceedings.

Service Animals Allowed

Service animals are limited to dogs and miniature horses that are trained to perform specific tasks related to a person’s disability. These animals are permitted in all court facilities, proceedings, and programs. If you plan to bring a service animal, advance notice is encouraged by submitting an ADA accommodation request.

Emotional Support Animals

Emotional support animals provide comfort but are not trained to perform tasks. They are not automatically permitted in court facilities. To bring an emotional support animal, you must submit a written request at least seven (7) days in advance. The request will be reviewed by a judge or the Chief Judge, and only with a signed order may the animal enter the courthouse.
