The Sixth Judicial Circuit is part of Florida’s state court system and serves the residents of Pasco and Pinellas counties. As Florida’s third largest trial court, the Sixth Judicial Circuit is recognized as one of the most efficient trial courts in the nation.

Judicial Structure & Assignment

69 Judges Total

45 at the circuit level and 24 in county courts.

Division

Cases are assigned to one of 13 Court Divisions (9 at the circuit level and 4 at the county level).

Process

The type of case determines the division, and the case is then randomly assigned to a judge within that division.

What Does the Court Do?

The Sixth Judicial Circuit handles both civil and criminal cases and ensures that legal matters are resolved fairly and according to the law. The Court:

Regional Geography & Facilities

Pasco County

Population (2020): Exceeded 561,800.
Judges: 15 circuit and 7 county.
Facilities: New Port Richey and Dade City.
Note: Pasco is geographically larger, but smaller in population.

Pinellas County

Population (2020): Approximately 959,100.
Judges: 30 circuit and 17 county.
Facilities: Five facilities in St. Petersburg and Clearwater (the largest cities in the circuit).

Court Divisions

Circuit Court

The Circuit Court is the court of general jurisdiction in Florida and handles more complex and serious cases. These cases often involve higher financial stakes, more significant legal issues, or matters that affect families and individuals long-term.

Circuit Court judges hear cases that may require detailed legal proceedings, multiple hearings, or jury trials.

Examples of cases handled:

Felony criminal cases
Family law (divorce, child custody, domestic violence)
Probate and guardianship
Juvenile cases
Civil disputes exceeding $50,000
Cases involving property, taxes, or equity

County Court

County Courts serve as the local trial courts for each county and handle less complex legal matters. These courts are often the first point of contact for many residents interacting with the judicial system.

County Court cases are typically resolved more quickly and involve lower financial amounts or less severe offenses.

Examples of cases handled:

Misdemeanor criminal cases
Violations of municipal or county ordinances
Civil disputes under $50,000
Small claims cases

County judges may also serve additional roles, such as acting as committing magistrates.

The Sixth Judicial Circuit is led by the Chief Judge, who is responsible for overseeing court operations, assigning judges, and ensuring cases are handled efficiently across the circuit.
