Opinion 79-11
September 20, 1979
Dear Judge:
This is in response to your letter of August 15th, 1979, wherein you inquired
as to the propriety of permitting publication of a letter you wrote to the
executive director of the Society for Values in Higher Education. The gist
of the letter was to describe a seminar in jurisprudence, which you, as
a member of the society, put on for the benefit of other judges. The letter
was written to demonstrate that the work of the society has some lasting
importance beyond academia. It is now proposed to use the letter to demonstrate
the value of the society to obtain a grant from a foundation.
Nine of the ten members responding were unanimous in their opinion that the proposed use of the letter does not violate the Canons of Ethics.
Yours truly,
James T. Carlisle, Chairman
